Background of the Study
Faith-based organizations (FBOs) have increasingly become pivotal players in environmental sustainability efforts worldwide, including in Nigeria. In Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State, faith-based groups, such as churches and mosques, play significant roles in raising awareness about climate change and implementing local climate action projects. These organizations are often well-positioned to influence communities, mobilize resources, and advocate for environmental stewardship based on religious teachings. Despite this, the role of FBOs in climate action in Nigeria has not been sufficiently explored. This study seeks to examine the role of faith-based organizations in climate action in Ilorin West, with a focus on their contributions to climate change awareness, mitigation, and adaptation (Adeleke & Adebayo, 2023).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While faith-based organizations in Ilorin West have the potential to significantly contribute to climate action, their involvement has not been fully harnessed. Limited research exists on the scope and impact of FBOs' environmental initiatives, and there is a lack of coordination between these organizations and government or non-governmental bodies. This study will explore the role of FBOs in addressing climate change, focusing on their activities, challenges, and successes in promoting sustainable environmental practices.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
• To examine the role of faith-based organizations in climate change awareness and action in Ilorin West.
• To assess the impact of FBOs' climate action initiatives on local communities in Ilorin West.
• To identify the challenges and opportunities for increasing the involvement of FBOs in climate action in Ilorin West.
1.4 Research Questions
• What roles do faith-based organizations play in climate action in Ilorin West?
• How effective are FBOs in promoting climate change awareness and action in Ilorin West?
• What challenges do faith-based organizations face in implementing climate action initiatives?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
• H1: Faith-based organizations play a significant role in climate action in Ilorin West.
• H2: Climate action initiatives by faith-based organizations lead to increased community awareness and engagement on climate change.
• H3: Faith-based organizations face significant challenges, such as resource limitations, in implementing climate action initiatives.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will highlight the crucial role that faith-based organizations can play in addressing climate change at the local level. The findings will be useful for policymakers, environmental advocacy groups, and faith-based leaders, offering insights into how religious institutions can be integrated into national and local climate strategies. By emphasizing the potential of FBOs, the study could contribute to enhancing collaborative efforts in climate action and fostering sustainable practices within communities (Adeleke & Adebayo, 2023).
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the role of faith-based organizations in climate action within Ilorin West Local Government Area, Kwara State. Limitations include potential challenges in accessing data on informal or unreported activities carried out by faith-based organizations, as well as the limited reach of climate action programs in some communities.
